Grampians Greywater Land Capability Assessment: Parks Victoria
Case study: Enhancing park sustainability through strategic greywater management
Wave Consulting Australia conducted Land Capability Assessments for Parks Victoria in the Grampians. The focus was on the sustainable management of greywater to support environmental conservation and park operations.

Aiming for a zero impact greywater treatment system
The problem
Wave Consulting Australia was engaged to undertake 12 LCAs for greywater treatment within the camping grounds of the Grampians National Park. The Grampians is a remote park in western Victoria.
In this context, greywater refers to water collected from kitchen areas and hand washing stations near the toilet blocks.
Parks Victoria aimed to prevent any adverse environmental impacts from greywater beyond the camp sites.
The scope of this project was designing an effective greywater treatment solution and performing LCAs to meet the requirements of local municipalities and the Environmental Protection Authority.
The solution
Wave Consulting developed a greywater water balance model to understand the capacity of the land, the required storage, and inflows based on varying camp site numbers and occupancy levels.
Additionally, Wave designed a passive treatment system for greywater from food preparation, dishwashing and oral hygiene. This system ensures that the pristine rivers and floodplains downstream remain unaffected by pollution.
The field investigations and report were prepared for the park manager with the explicit aim of creating a ‘zero impact greywater treatment system.
The outcome
Parks Victoria received a land capability assessment for 12 sites within the Grampians National Park.
Through site and soil assessments, it was determined that an onsite greywater system is feasible for the management of wastewater at all of the proposed camp shelters and campsites. Our recommendation included using an organic mulch pre-filter and a modified wicking trench and bed.
Parks Victoria has now built and is operating these innovative greywater filter systems, within the national park, to meet this zero impact objective.
