WSUD Smart Passive watering system for trees: Mooney Valley CITY council

Case study: Maximising water efficiency and urban greenery through innovative WSUD Smart Passive Watering systems on Raglan Street

Wave Consulting developed the design of a smart passive watering system for Mooney Valley City Council. The system was for existing street trees in Raglan Street, Avondale Heights. Our team oversaw construction and project finalisation phases, engaging with contractors on site and responding to 'as constructed' design changes.

Key facts

Canopy cover reduces surface tempertare on a street by up to 20°C

Passively watered trees grow twice as fast compared to regular street trees that are not watered

The problem

To address climate change and urban stress, Mooney Valley City Council is increasing the tree canopy cover across their local government area. Their target is for 10% of passively watered trees to rely solely on stormwater for passive watering, particularly in residential and commercial streets.

A problem they faced was finding effective WSUD design solutions and on ground projects to deliver on these targets.

The solution

Wave designed a passive irrigation plan for 13 new trees and one mature tree in Moonee Valley.

The passive system was designed around existing services and maintenance requirements. It also was designed to allow new trees to grow faster and larger, providing shading and greenery for this high traffic area near a shopping strip.

The outcome

The smart passive watering system design was carried out and constructed successfully.

Wave provided construction supervision works and over the coming years will also monitor the landscape, water and tree growth.
