Falls and Hotham Land Capability Assessment: Parks Victoria
Case Study: Greywater management plan and treatment system
Parks Victoria wanted to assess the capability of four campsites on the Falls to Hotham alpine crossing hiking trail to sustainably utilise and manage wastewater within the allotment boundaries.
Project type: Land Capability Assessment
Jaithmathang Mittung, Gunaikurnai, and Taungurung lands, Victorian Alpine Ranges
Key facts
Approximately two million people visit the alpine region each year, many for walking and trekking
Forecasting indicates this will increase with better facilities and more campsites
The problem
Parks Victoria engaged Wave Consulting Australia to complete a Land Capability Assessment of four new campsites in the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing in the Victorian Alpine Ranges.
The project team was to undertake site visits, field investigations and greywater modelling to complete a grey water management plan and treatment system.
The aim was for the system to have zero impact on the environment according to all EPA, Australian Standards, and local council regulations.
The solution
This project included adapting all modelling assumptions and results to a pristine natural environment, located below the snow line through the winter season and with fluctuating demand and precipitation.
Through site and soil assessments an onsite greywater management system was recommended for the management of kitchenette and toilet handbasin waste water.
The proposed greywater system utilises an organic mulch pre-filter and wicking trench and bed.
The solution
Parks Victoria was provided with a land capability assessment for four camping sites in the Alpine National Park.
This assessment included a recommended sustainable solution to wastewater management that mitigates environmental impact.
