Queenscliffe community battery study

Big sustainability goals to reduce emissions

The Borough of Queenscliffe is the smallest local government area in Victoria. But it might have one of the biggest sustainability goals for reducing emissions.

Welcome sign on a roadside saying "Welcome to the Borough of Queenscliffe".

To support a regional emissions reduction strategy and climate action plan, the Borough recently adopted a strategy for:

  • 75% of dwellings to have solar

  • 90% of commercial roofs to have solar.

Wave Consulting Australia has been engaged by the Barwon South West Community Power Hub (BSW-CPH) to investigate the role of community batteries in this transition towards 100% renewable energy supply by 2027, and a ‘Zero Carbon Community’ by 2031.

We will be working with the Borough of Queenscliffe, Geelong Sustainability Group and the Queenscliffe Climate Action Group for this exciting project.

What community battery options are feasible?

We will be reviewing and modelling four different scenarios:

  • one large community battery

  • several smaller community batteries

  • home batteries

  • a hybrid of these options.

We hope to learn more about the value of these battery scenarios for the community. And importantly, learn how they will accelerate the transition to a climate-resilient Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale.

There are already several suitable sites for community batteries. Plus, there is interest from The Borough, Powercor and the community to make it work.

We look forward to reporting back in a few months.

This work is located on the lands of the Wadawurrung people.
